24/10/2012, Nha-Nghi Huynh (Kühne Logistics University), on "The Impact of Unsolicited Donations on Relief Programs"

 Abstract

Why do beneficiaries not receive the right aid items they urgently require or why are international humanitarian organisations often not able to deliver these items fast enough after the occurrence of natural disasters? One of the reasons is the chaotic setting in which international humanitarian organisations operate. But what affects high-priority deliveries more are material convergences at disaster entry points caused by unsolicited donations. These unrequested donations consume excessive resources and create serious bottlenecks. We present a model that illustrates the impacts of unsolicited donations on relief operations and also provide an overview of our future research.
